Biases and improvements of the ENSO-East Asian winter monsoon teleconnection in CMIP5 and CMIP6 models

چکیده

The influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is investigated based outputs phase 6 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models and compared to that in 5 (CMIP5). Results show overall CMIP6 reproduce ENSO-EAWM teleconnection more realistically than CMIP5 models, although they still somewhat underestimate observed. Based intermodel spread simulated CMIP5/CMIP6 we reveal commonly underestimated among can be traced back excessive extension cold tongue equatorial western Pacific. A model with a stronger climatological favors generating westward ENSO-related SST anomaly pattern, which turn forces an anomalous cyclonic circulation over Northwest Pacific (NWP). It offsets anticyclonic anomalies NWP weakens teleconnection. Compared most better simulate mean state resultant present results suggest substantial efforts should made reduce bias mean-state for further improving simulation projection Asian-western climate.

Intermodel spread of East Asian summer monsoon simulations in CMIP5

In this paper we diagnose the intermodel spread in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) simulations in the context of the moist static energy and moisture budgets. We find that the spatial distribution of the EASM precipitation simulated by different models is highly correlated with the meridional stationary eddy velocity, defined as the dev...

East Asian winter monsoon: results from eight AMIP models

This study evaluates simulations of the East Asian winter monsoon in eight GCMs that participated in the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP). In addition to validating the mean state of the winter monsoon, the cold surge and its transient properties, which includes the frequency, intensity, preferred propagation tracks, and the evolution patterns of the surges, are examined. GCM si...

Comparison of the impact of the Arctic Oscillation and 2 East Atlantic / West Russia teleconnection on interannual variation in 3 East Asian winter temperatures and monsoon

20 The large-scale impacts of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and the East Atlantic/West Russia 21 (EA/WR) teleconnection on the East Asian winter climate anomalies are compared for the 22 past 34 winters focusing on 1) interannual monthly to seasonal temperature variability, 2) 23 East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and 3) the Siberian high (SH) and cold surge. 24 Regression analysis reveals warming...

Tropical impact on the East Asian winter monsoon

[1] The tropical impact on the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is examined in an ensemble of atmospheric general circulation model runs that use relaxation towards the ERA-40 reanalysis in the tropics for winters between 1960/61 and 2001/02 and performed with a recent version of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model. 25% of the interannual variance of the EAWM can be rep...

ENSO Asymmetry in CMIP5 Models

The El Ni~ no–La Ni~ na asymmetry is evaluated in 14 coupled models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The results show that an underestimate of ENSO asymmetry, a common problem noted in CMIP3 models, remains a common problem in CMIP5 coupled models. The weaker ENSO asymmetry in the models primarily results from a weaker SST warm anomaly over the eastern Pacific ...
